The narration of Valentine's Day

Each February all over the world candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged amongst loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. A very common query is who is this weird and wonderful saint and what is the reason for celebrating this day There is not much known about the history of Valentine's Day and its patron saint. However we do know that February has for a long period been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, include remnants of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. Lets find about Saint Valentine and how did he end up being connected with this ancient rite In the present day, the Catholic Church identifies at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.

One legend asserts that Valentine was a priest who served at some point in the third century in Rome. At the time of Emperor Claudius II’s decision that single men made superior soldiers than those with wives and families, he banned marriage for young men -- his yield of possible soldiers. Valentine, realizing the unfairness of the decree, defied Claudius and persistently performed marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's dealings were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories propose that Valentine may have been killed for trying to help Christians flee harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

As per a legend, Valentine in fact sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. At the time of his imprisonment it is supposed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl who could have been the jailor's daughter. Prior to his death, it is assumed that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' a turn of phrase that is still in use in the present day. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is misty, the stories certainly lay emphasis on his appeal as a compassionate, heroic, and, most significantly, romantic figure. It is no eye-opener that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

The Christian custom of undertaking names on St. Valentine's Eve was continued in England and other places. The ritual of birds choosing their mates on St. Valentine's Day indicated to the thought that boys and girls would do the same. Now when a young boy drew a girl's name, he wore it on the sleeve of his shirt, and wooed and cosseted her during the following year. Then the girl was his valentine and they gave each other love tokens all through the year. Later this was altered to only men giving love tokens to females, more often than not without names but signed "with St. Valentine's Love."

Later on, in France, both sexes took out chits from the valentine box, and it went on like this. On St. Valentine's Eve an equivalent number of Maids and Bachelors got together, each wrote their true or some pretend name upon separate piece of papers, which they roll up and drew by way of lots, the Maids taking the Men's chit, and the Men the Maids'; Each of the young Men goes to a Girl whom he calls his Valentine, and each of the Girls goes to a young Man whom she calls hers. Luck having thus separated the company into so many couples, the valentines gave balls and treats to their mistresses, and this little game often ends in Love. This rite is practiced in a many way in different Countries, and according to the freedom or severity of Valentine.

Currently the modern day valentine is different. By and large young boys and girls and sometimes young couple celebrate valentine day.
