Explore Cambridge Neighborhoods

Cambridge is a city of distinct squares, and rent, commute and character change sharply between them. Each link below opens live listings for that neighborhood.

Harvard Square

The best known of the squares, wrapped around Harvard Yard and the Red Line. Housing is a mix of period triple-deckers, converted single-family homes and a small number of newer buildings. Demand runs on the academic calendar, so the deepest inventory appears in late spring for September starts, and competition in August is intense.

Central Square

Between Harvard and MIT, Central is the most mixed-use part of the city — restaurants, music venues and a heavy Red Line commuter flow. Rents typically sit below Harvard and Kendall for comparable space, which makes it a common landing spot for graduate students and early-career renters.

Kendall Square

The biotech and technology core, with the newest construction stock in Cambridge and correspondingly the highest rents. Buildings here are more likely to be professionally managed with amenities, in-unit laundry and elevator access than the older housing further west.

Porter Square and North Cambridge

Quieter, more residential, and popular with renters who want Red Line access without Harvard or Kendall pricing. Porter sits on the Somerville line, so listings in this band are worth searching alongside Davis Square.

East Cambridge, Inman and Cambridgeport

East Cambridge and Inman carry a lot of the city's older two- and three-family housing, often with porches and yards that newer buildings lack. Cambridgeport, between Central and the river, is largely residential and quiet for how central it is.

Renting in Cambridge: What to Expect

Cambridge is a landlord's market for most of the year, driven by Harvard, MIT and the Kendall Square employers. The practical consequences are worth knowing before you start.

The September 1 cycle

An unusually large share of Cambridge leases begin on September 1. Inventory peaks roughly March through June for those starts; searching in July or August means competing for whatever is left. If your dates are flexible, a lease starting outside the cycle usually costs less and faces far less competition.

What you typically need

Expect to provide proof of income, references and identification, and to be ready to move quickly on a unit you want. Students without income history are often asked for a guarantor. Because listings here come straight from the agency or owner, questions about requirements can be answered by the person who actually controls the unit.

Getting around

The Red Line runs the length of the city through Kendall, Central, Harvard, Porter and Alewife, and much of Cambridge is genuinely walkable and bike-friendly. Parking is the real constraint: many older buildings have none, and city permits are limited, so confirm parking before signing if you keep a car.

About Cambridge

Cambridge sits directly across the Charles River from Boston and is home to roughly 118,000 residents, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It is one of the most densely populated cities in the United States, and its housing stock reflects that: predominantly older multi-family buildings, with newer high-rise construction concentrated around Kendall Square.

Cambridge listings come from hundreds of licensed agents, agencies and property owners who update inventory through our own platform, which is why the counts and averages on this page reflect what is genuinely available today rather than a monthly snapshot.
