Originally established on a homestead dating back to 1803 as a dairy farm, Southwick's Zoo has grown into New England's largest zoo. Located in Mendon MA, Spanning over 200 acres, it is now home to more than 850 animals representing over 160 different species, including some that are endangered. Among the diverse range of animals are giraffes, cranes, tapirs, flamingos, emus, Watusi cattle, lemurs, lions, tigers, camels, rhinos, and alligators.
Notably, Southwick's Zoo is family-owned and operated by the Brewer (Southwick) family. It receives no federal, state, or local funding, depending entirely on admission proceeds to support its operations.
The zoo participates in conservation efforts, such as the Zoological Association of America (ZAA) cheetah conservation program, contributing to species' genetic diversity.
