A Story of Riding and Friendship

By Roberta Fineberg

CITY RIDERS: A Story of Riding and Friendship

(Howell/Macmillan/Simon & Schuster; October 1997, $17.95 Hardcover).

Through Fineberg's evocative photographs of girls and horses, we experience the friendship of three city girls who ride at Claremont Riding Academy New York City's oldest public riding stable. Before the girls set foot or hoof on Central Park's bridle paths they take many hours of riding lessons as well as learn to groom and tack up a horse. The responsibility of caring for the barn horses offers these "city riders" yet another experience. To their surprise the girls learn more than how to ride and care for horses, they also discover the importance of cooperation and friendship'a camaraderie that supports them as they try to balance the demands of schoolwork and chores at the stable along with the stress and excitement of participating in horse shows.

CITY RIDERS offers a glimpse into the lives of three young women who have gained a sense of pride and accomplishment through their love of riding and their devotion to their favorite horses at the barn.
