Processes
CASTING
Casting is the process of pouring molten metal into a mold that takes its shape and form from a carefully crafted metal model. There is an artistic and technical advantage in this process because the model can provide deeper relief and three dimensional renditions of many items, some of which cannot be achieved in other processes such as die-striking. The castings are generally manufactured in pewter or other base metals from rubber molds. This process usually has lower set-up and mold costs than other processes.
LOST WAX
This process is similar to the methods used in traditional casting, and is utilized primarily for 3-dimensional, highly detailed replicas and symbols. A finely sculpted wax or metal model is vulcanized in rubber or cut in a brass mold in the first step. then a wax reproduction is made. A plaster-like investment then surrounds the wax model which is followed by a baking in "the oven". The wax melts away (lost wax) leaving a cavity ready to receive molten brass, silver or gold. Once poured, a centrifugal (spinning_ casting process forces the molten metal into the created nooks and crannies. Rings are the main products produced in this manner.
DIE-STRUCK
The striking of metal with dies results in a high-resolution of detail and a greater flexibility in the choice of materials. A metal blank is pressed with great force between finely crafted steel dies that are precisely cut by Creative artisans. Excess metals then flow at the edges of the pressed metal requiring the use of trim tools. The finely cut dies, trim tools and machinery usually contribute additional expense to the product.
3D SCULPTURES
Each one of these reproductions we design are precision cast in pewter or other fine metals. From either a photograph, blue-print or diagram these items are hand-crafted in a variety of sizes, usually into a miniature model of the real thing. Customarily, they are mounted to enhance presentation, to function as a free standing piece.
